Gala opening weekend planned for chocolate week

The Dunedin Cadbury Chocolate Carnival is set to open on Saturday 11 July with a colourful indoor extravaganza, an experience families do not want to miss. The Cadbury Dairy Milk Gala Day will be held at the Edgar Centre from 9am till 4pm.

For $2 entry fee, participants can experience loads of interactive entertainment including the 7.3m high Cadbury Chocolate Climbing Wall and a live show starring Freddo. Join Freddo the Frog and his friends in their very own show, full of dancing and singing and lots of audience participation. Everyone’s favourite Cadbury character Freddo has been around for years and loved by people of all ages.

“The inaugural Gala Day is looking fantastic with so many fun and interactive things to do for everyone.  It is a great start to what is going to be an awesome week” said Dunedin City Council events spokesperson Kim Newman.
Sunday 12 July will celebrate the diverse range of attractions and wildlife available on Dunedin’s back door. Experience our Peninsula Day brings together a range of businesses and tours on Otago’s beautiful peninsula and they will all be offering once in a life time entry specials on this day only.
This fantastic opportunity enables Dunedinites and visitors to see Glenfalloch Woodland Gardens, Larnach Castle, NZ Marine Studies Centre and Aquarium, Monarch Wildlife Cruises, Natures Wonders and the Royal Albatross Centre. Also involved are Happy Hens, Yellow Eyed Penguin Trust and the Department of Conservation will be hosting visits to Quarantine Island / Kamautaurua leaving from the jetty at Portobello.

Perry Reid, owner/operator from Natures Wonders said “We are thrilled to be involved. We were booked out with in 10 days, the response has been unbelieveable. We are trying to get more drivers and argos available on the day in order to host people who may arrive on the day. Our cafe will be open serving hot food and drinks for those who may not be able to get on a tour”.

The Portobello Village Farmers Market will be a hive of activity on the day, with live music and entertainers adding to the family atmosphere. Acting as the hub, buses will depart the market to Monarch Wildlife Cruises, Royal Albatross Centre, Natures Wonders, Larnach Castle and the Aquarium to help relieve traffic congestion on the day. There will be a gold coin donation to use this service.
